About Braga:

Braga is one of the oldest cities in Portugal founded by the Romans more than 2000 years ago, naming it Bracara Augusta. The city of Braga, one of Portugal´s main religious centres, is known for its baroque churches, splendid 18th century houses and elaborate gardens and parks.

In the last decades, and due to the developing industry and commerce, Braga has acquired a vibrant lifestyle, driven by its universities, newly built neighbourhoods, bars and restaurants. The recent reopening of the Theatro Circo, an Italian style theatre considered to be one of the most beautiful theatres in Portugal, has increased the cultural offer. Additionally, Braga is known for its numerous restaurants, well representing the famous regional cuisine of the Minho region.

On the forested slope overlooking the town from the East, is one of Portugal’s most famous tourist attraction, Igreja de Bom Jesus do Monte. Built in 1776, its impressive Baroque staircase is symbolic of the Fourteen Stations of the Cross that lead the many visitors upwards to the Church. A primitive funicular railway dating from 1882 still runs-up alongside the steps.

Its close proximity to a series of interesting places makes Braga an excellent starting point to discover the North of Portugal. Braga is located 50 km from Porto, 20 Km from Guimarães, 40 km from the Peneda-Gerês National Park and 35 km from the coast.
